it wasnt easy, i assure you.. im surprised i havent died of the fumes yet.. couldnt quite get the cross right wif red nail polish, so i kept redoing it (like more than 10 times, n im not exaggerating...), till my mum came up wif the ingenious idea of using a red marker! haha, so i cheated. still it wasnt easy, since the marker couldnt work well on nail polish..

so im gonna treat this sort of like a report, wif lessons learnt at the end of the day at the bottom of each daily post yeah..

there's nothing to boast about the first day..

mainly had briefings n tour..

oh yes! being typical me, i started off by embarrassing myself..

jiahai n i introed ourselves earlier, so when sher lynn n sait yie introed themselves, they were quite surprised when he didnt offer to..

sher lynn n sait yie: *look at jiahai* wat about u leh?
jiahai: no need.. she noes me already wert..
me: haha yeah i noe i noe! *thinks hard* it's.. *confidently* jiahui rite!

before we left, we had another meeting.. few of us were waiting in the conference room when this nurse opened the door n asked, "which department r u from?"

AHAHAH.. we were so tempted to answer back, "oh.. we're the board of directors.."

it's surprising, the number of ppl who actually mistook us for doctors.. ahh.. cant wait for my turn..

well.. anyway, i did learn dat:

1. the hosp didnt hav the dettol-ish antiseptic smell i thought it'd hav.. instead, it has this faint, sort of sweetish smell.. gives me a headache..

2. the mortuary has the exact same smell, but like, a zillion times stronger.. seriously, the word sickeningly sweet fits in perfectly.. makes u wanna throw up after 10 mins of being in there..

3. doctors must hav really good stamina man.. especially surgeons.. cant imagine them conducting a surgery while sitting on chairs..! haha.. so for now.. id start training myself.. to stand for long periods of time.. oh n also to not doze off easily.. or to jump at little noises..

4. apparently, med students only sleep like, 4 -6 hrs a day.. dat's okay for me.. about the same amt im sleeping currently..

supposedly a very bad day.. cos 666 is devil's number, eh? not for me though.. hehe i was relatively lucky.. we-ell, my horoscope did say tuesday's my lucky day.. n no. 6 is my lucky number.. so how much luckier can i get if not for the 6th of june 2006 on a tuesday?

yesterday, ms angie managed to get 2 cases for our grp, but only 2 ppl r allowed at any one time so we had to draw lots, which left the 6 of us.. our agenda today was to observe how the doctors in the outpatient clinics handle their patients.. was quite dubious at first.. expected that they were only gonna let us watch the gps from the corners of the clinics..

started off the morning wif sait yie n sher lynn going off to watch the endoscopy.. those two lucky fellas! so jiahai n i hung around for ms angie to get us, wif the rest waiting at starbucks.. were gonna join them, but ms angie came along n greeted us wif a smile, saying dat she had at least one more case, so jiahai n me were like.. two of us la! jokingly, of course.. like we'd ever be mean enough to snatch the opportunity without giving the rest a chance first.. but she took us seriously, so we were like.. owh well (: looks like we're quite lucky, arent we..

got a more detailed tour of the OPTs this time, from sr tye.. about half an hr later, sait yee n sher lynn rejoined our grp.. then sr tye assigned 2 to a floor.. jiahai, me n another 2 (dunno their names.. ) followed her to G floor.. waited for our turn to watch the endoscopy.. then this dr came along n said one at a time only.. so jiahai went first.. this dentist took the rest of us.. was listening to him give a really interesting talk.. about facial reconstructuring n stuff.. then a nurse came in, saying dr smth smth's happy to take one of us..

obviously i thought she meant it was my turn to observe the endoscopy.. was surprised when she asked to wait outside one of the OPTs.. turns out his name's dr. akhtar qureshi.. general surgeon.. studied in england, ireland n germany.. =O when i saw dat, i got really excited..! still havent really decided if i want to be a cardiologist or a general surgeon..

so anyway, dr qureshi's a damn nice guy, he explained all the procedures to me without using really complicated medical terms, so i could understand them easily..all in all, had about 7 cases in total..

first was a man wif colon cancer.. had a portion of his colon removed, just slightly above the rectum.. so the dr rejoined the rest of his large intestine to the rectum.. he was given a bag temporarily for faeces storage.. surprisingly, i wasnt grossed out when i saw the faeces filled-bag.. poor guy's only 34.. the cancer spread to one of his lymph glands, but it isnt too serious.. hopefully he'll be able to recover soon enough..

2nd was this man who had.. um.. cant rmb if it's 7 or 14, tumours removed.. thank goodness none of them were malignant..

next was this pair of siblings, who came on the behalf of their 60-yr-old father, who has stomach cancer.. apparently, he still believes dat it's merely a stomach ulcer, n refuses to undergo surgery to remove his stomach, as the ulcer is only 3 mm large.. oh btw, i forgot to mention dat his children havent gotten around to breaking the news to him yet.. oh yeah! i managed to watch the vid of the endoscopy of his stomach too..

then this patient came in for his check up.. he had colon cancer 3 yrs ago.. thankfully, there's isnt any sign of return of the cancer..

n there's a man wif gangrene appendicitis (if im not mistaken).. usually the appendix will rupture at the bottom, where the doctors r able to seal if off nicely, but this man's ruptured at the top, so the doctor had to reconstruct a part of his colon..

another man, wif a non-malignant tumour removed from his leg.. unfortunately, his wound got infected.. ouch..

dat leaves us wif.. this 15-yr-old girl wif breast cancer.. so sad.. i noe! since she's so young, so the dr said the chances of the cancer coming back is quite high.. plus she's got not one, but TWO tumours..

hmm.. i think dat's about it.. im quite positive i left one out, but since i dun rmb, i cant blog about it -.-

yeah.. i was luckier than the rest, cos even though some of them managed to watch the endoscopy in process (i watched the vid tho!), they spent the rest of the time waiting for other drs to take them in, but most drs were too busy to entertain them.. so i was the only special one! :P

haha.. sort of felt like a dog.. tagging after dr qureshi, when he switched between the treatment room n his office.. woof woof!

oh oh! i absolutely love it when the drs/ nurses intro us as premed students (: hahah

was trying not to kembang so much, when ppl stared at us when we walked in..

cant wait to be called dr. toh.. haha!

okay! today i learnt dat..:

1. ppl like to be called by their names.. so at all times, address them by mr./mrs./ms/dr. ..actually.. i learnt this like, 2 yrs ago.. from some usher training thingy..

2. patients like their doctor to explain their situation/ procedures to them.. preferably wif simple medical terms.. n drawings too..

3. oh yes.. eye contact is important too, to gain the patients' confidence..

4. must hav some knowledge in insurance n stuff too.. cos at times, patients will ask for advice too, regarding well.. insurance..

sr jasmine taught us CPR today (: bet some of u dont know wat it stands for.. okay.. CPR is short for.. *drumroll*




CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION!




okay, seeing as how forgetful i am, i shall post this up for future reference.. please, do not attempt this if u hav not been trained by any professionals..

ADULTS
1. check for responsiveness [by calling out to the person's name n tapping his shoulders..]
2. call EMS
3. A - clear the Airway [head tilt/ chin lift]
4. B - check for Breathing [look, listen n feel]
5. if there isnt any, give TWO rescue breaths..
6. C - check for Circulation [carotid arteries]
7. if there isnt any, begin chess compressions [15: 2]
8. repeat cycle 4 times
9. check for circulation again..
10. if there's breathing AND circulation, put the patient in recovery position [e.g., on his side]

INFANTS
1. check for responsiveness [by tapping feet]
2. perform steps 3 - 8 [as above] for a min
3. call EMS
4. continue wif CPR if there still isnt any breathing or circulation
5. if there's both, lay the baby in recovery position

playing around wif the mannequins was great fun.. (: took loads of photos too.. shall post them up later, when i get them..

n then we got a tour of A & E from sr joyce, looks damn cool.. got to see some samples of CT scans n x-rays.. too bad we didnt get to see any cases.. haha admittedly, we were kindda mean, hoping to see some code blue or pink cases, at the expense of others, so in a way.. im glad there wasnt any, even if it meant we didnt get to observe the procedure..

oh! we managed to convince sr *cough* i mean, mr tan jiahai to to volunteer for the ECG (dat's electrocardiogram for you... ) demo too! was really amusing.. poking at his rib bones n watching him squirm (:

thank goodness the nurses had a sense of humour n didnt scold us.. unlike SOME..

surgiscrub's really foamy.. so fun to scrub ur hands wif.. haha.. cant believe sher lynn n i got conned into thinking dat the machine was automated -.-

the alcohol stinks tho it smells nice at first..

by the end of the day, i learnt:

1. how to perform proper CPR, n dat it's wayyyy harder than it looks..
2. how ECG is done
3. how to scrub my hands properly -.-
4. drs cannot hav long fingernails.. cause discomfort to some patients, see..

radiology sounds cooler than it really is -.-
at least i can tell the diff between a CT scan, x-ray n MRI now..
n we did manage to watch a CT scan in the process.. quite funny really.. sher lynn (aka br lim), sait yie (aka br kong) n urs truly (aka br toh) were waiting for the dr to set up everything in the CT room.. being the sakais dat we r, we talked rubbish quite loudly... (: so the dr came into the control room n he started speaking into the mic to the patient.. i looked at br kong n i was like.. uh-oh.. dat means he heard everything we said earlier?! so we started laughing about it till br lim pointed out dat the mic was off then T.T

oh yes, i managed to watch an endoscopy after all! it was damn ouch man.. when i heard the patient moaning, i could almost picture his pain as well.. i wont pretend i wasnt grossed out by the procedure.. the whole time all we could see was the large intestine.. n inside it was some yellowish liquid.. n the dr had to keep draining of the liquid using the suction.. i hav to say, im pretty proud of myself tho, for not showing any sign of disgust.. (: oh yeah.. there were also bits of floating veggie inside it as well..

anyone wanna take a guess wat the yellowish liquid is? :D

n then we visited the lab.. it's pretty interesting, but we couldnt do anything so we got bored real quick.. a couple of MLTs there were really really helpful n friendly.. (:

mm today was nearly as boring as mon..

lesson learnt today:

1. do not, EVER walk past the MRI room wif smth huge n metallic.. even in an emergency.. the consequences r too horrific to be described.. pic any scenes from Final Destination n u might just get the idea..
2. do not voice out ur opinion too freely at some strange place.. u never noe.. there might be some mic around somewhere..
3. do not ever cross a nurse.. path or otherwise.. they can be pretty scary at times..
4. do not sleep when br lim, br kong, or sr tan is around.. u never noe wat they might do in ur sleep...

ahhh so sad.. it's the last day.. ):

rehab centre was pretty boring.. didnt hav much to do, since we couldnt *ahem* test the machines.. haha so i slept.. again -.- in my defense, i'm sick.. got such a shock when i woke up to find myself in the middle of a conversation.. like, literally.. pic this, physiotherapist on one side of me, grp member on the other side, n they were talking right across me..

anyway! then we went to watch the haemodialysis.. after watching it, i vowed to take good care of my kidneys.. seriously! imagine having to come back for the treatment 3 times a week, n each session lasts about 4 hrs, costing RM190.. dat'll be around RM3000 per mth! i can buy like, 3 new hps per mth at dat rate -.- not to mention having ur skin poked around the same area each time.. dat's like.. anti-tetanus jab every few days.. n dun get me started on ur new diet.. NO SALTY foods! ahh NOOOOOOO! how can anyone survive without eating like, fries! okay okay, id better stop now..

we were at the cafeteria, then we heard an announcement for code blue in ICU, so br lim n i, being the jakuns, rushed all the way upstairs to look for ms angie, but we're not allowed to go in anyway -.- cheh.. got us excited for nothing..

after break, visited ward.. n dat's about it i think..

ms judy's so cute, she thought we're like 19 & 20.. haha

so i typed this reallyyyyyyy longgggggggggg post ytd AND blogger n my com had to choose dat perfect moment to collaborate to make my life miserable.. u dun hav to try too hard to guess dat the whole post got deleted..

anyway! i wanna start off by saying.. isa was rite.. the new cine was no biggie.. personally, id prefer GSC cos after all, it does hav wider seats =D for ppl like me who love to sit cross-legged during the movies..

i never get why some ppl view their special powers as curses rather than gifts.. if it were me, one of the things id love more than anything is to hav some kind of special power.. preferably one dat will enable me to fly :P

when the movie ended, i was about to walk out of the cinema.. but i realised not all of the lights were on.. so i thought... maybe there's still u noe a short scene at the end... but then again.. maybe it's just cine.. so i didnt linger around to check if i was right.. which turned out i was anyway -.- damnnn wasted.. shd've listened to myself.. *dish*

i was trying to finish the book before watching it..
but i only got about halfway through.. somehow i ALWAYS ALWAYS fall asleep reading, no matter how interesting the reading material is.. yes even harry potter.. -.-

anyhow.. the suspense was already built! n i did hav a rough idea of wat the story's about, so it wasnt a total loss.. so throughout the movie, i was on tenterhooks, trying to anticipate who was the one behind all of it.. i thought fache was at first.. n then i predicted it to be remy but somehow, smth didnt quite fit.. so i guessed again - teabing.. n i was rite =D

man.. i hate it when old ppl r involved somehow.. i always feel a sense of pity for them.. no matter if they're evil or not.. like magneto, at the last part.. i felt really sorry for him, even though he deserved it.. owh well...

silas the albino didnt quite look albino -.- n he has blue eyes
the last supper part's totally cool.. shall try it out myself n post it if it's real..
but like they said.. even if da vinci did paint it like dat, it doesnt mean it's true..
